Will You Be Shaped or Broken?

“You can be shaped, or you can be broken. There is not much in between. Try to learn. Be coachable. Try to learn from everybody, especially those who fail.” David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest.

I love this quote. We all experience bad stuff in our lives, whether bad experiences that are our own doing, or bad experiences that are someone else’s fault. Bad things just happen, sometimes – flukes, illness, death.

Bad things are part of life. The sooner we accept that, the better.

We need to drop the thought that “It’s not fair”. Life isn’t fair. It was never meant to be fair. No one ever promised you fair, did they?

There isn’t always an upside. I’m not a PollyAnna sort who says there is good in everything. Sometimes, there just isn’t. But we can learn to accept that, stoically, and move on.

We can choose to be shaped by a bad event, or we can choose to be broken. And the key is in the word “choose“.

No one chooses your thoughts for you – your brain creates them.

No one chooses your mindset – that’s under your ultimate control.

The truth is, our thoughts are the only thing in life that are under our control.

When you finally understand that, you’ll know that the life you live is driven by your thoughts – your choices.

Choose to let your thoughts about an experience shape you rather than break you.

Choose to learn from others, from their mistakes and their successes.

Choose to let life shape you rather than break you.
