Will You Be Shaped or Broken?

“You can be shaped, or you can be broken. There is not much in between. Try to learn. Be coachable. Try to learn from everybody, especially those who fail.” David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest. I love this quote. We all experience bad stuff in our lives, whether bad experiences that are our own doing, or bad experiences that are someone else’s fault. Bad things just happen, sometimes – flukes, illness, death. Bad things are part of life. The sooner we accept that, the better. We need to drop the thought that “It’s not fair”. Life isn’t fair. It was never meant to be fair. No one ever promised you fair, did…

    Judgement Days

We are more judgemental now than ever before. Why do we see binary – black or white – and not shades of difference? Why are we so intent on putting people into boxes and react accordingly? The main culprit is social media. We open our Facebook feed (or Twitter, Instagram, whatever social media we use). And we’re presented with a scrollable list of posts, articles, photos, polls, questions, and links. Social media is so fast that our brain has to make instant decisions. Neuroscience shows that our brains get addicted by the new and the novel, keeping us scrolling through, hooked into seeing the next, and the next. On every single…

    Everyday Amazing: Paying Car Insurance

Doesn’t sound that amazing, does it, having to pay car insurance? The reminder arrives, and you trawl through the comparison sites to find a better deal, because you just know the renewal is always a rip off. I wasted an hour of my time doing just that the other evening. And time is precious. My time is precious, and so is yours. Ain’t nobody got time for that! But then I thought….. Turn it on it’s head: why do I have to pay for car insurance? Because I am fortunate enough to have a car. A car that sits outside my house so anytime day or night I can get in…

    Our Greatest Addiction

What is our greatest addiction? Asking this question gets you a variety of answers. Many people say coffee, or sugar, or drugs. Alcohol, TV or social media. And of course they can all be damaging addictions. But one addiction that flies under most people’s radars, and one of the most damaging for our mental health, is a having a negative perspective in life. Talking about our problems all the time. Let’s be honest, we all do it. It often seems it’s easier to focus on the negative and what is or has gone wrong, than to talk about the things that are right in our lives. Why do we do it?…

    Drains and Radiators

This is a concept I was introduced to many years ago.  The idea is that people generally fall into two camps: drains or radiators. DRAINS are the people who sap the energy out of you. They’re negative and self-absorbed. When you try to be upbeat or positive, they are quick to knock you back down and to discourage you. If you come up with an idea they’ll tell you it can’t be done. Can’t be changed. No point even trying.  They see clouds in every silver lining.  And they’ll leave you feeling tired – drained of energy and motivation. A drain has the power to bring everyone around them down. RADIATORS…

    Everyday Amazing: Grand Canyon Focus

Have you ever been to the Grand Canyon? It’s awe-inspiring: a real visual feast. And one of the things that amazed me most was how close you can go to the edge. You can stand on the edge. Dangle your toes over the edge. Lean forward and look over the edge, to see the deep and steep drop down. Scary, even if you’re not afraid of heights. But imagine the focus you have standing on that edge. The concentration on not leaning forward too much, not overbalancing, not moving your feet an inch forward. The concentration of that very moment. And that moment alone. Now imagine bringing that intense focus to something that you’re doing.…
